Should public figures get in trouble for their opinions?

So curt schilling, a former MLB player and current ESPN analyst posted a meme about the stuff happening with trans people and bathrooms and it basically created an uproar and ESPN is now "investigating the matter".  I attached the meme, but this is not meant to be a trans discussion.  Personally, I find it kind of scary that people in the public eye are not allowed to have their own beliefs, whether I agree with them or not, offensive or not.  It's all such a PR show that these people have to remain silent on how they truly feel.  In a way I think that would be awful to have basically what you say be under a constant microscope and speaking your mind could result in your being fired.  Where is the line drawn on what's acceptable to say or what's acceptable to be fired over? What if employers fired people for their abortion stance, or for being involved in BLM movements? What happened to freedom of speech?
