Question for those switching to part time work after baby

I currently work full time but after my first baby is born I'm considering asking my boss if I can reduce my hours to part time. I don't want to say anything yet because I don't want to risk losing my partially paid maternity leave, so I'm thinking I'll wait to ask until midway through my leave. Has anyone else been in this situation? When did you ask? What happened?
