Sex after delivery?

How long did you actually wait? I'll be 6 weeks post partum on Sunday 8/14, however I can't get into the doctor for my post partum checkup till the 22nd. Should I wait till the doctors appointment or call it good after 6 weeks? It's also my hubbys birthday that weekend before my appointment, and since I was hoping to be cleared already, we have planned our first baby free evening to celebrate and have some 'adult time' finally.
