Buckling his own seat belt?

Question

My son is 5 and has a car seat were a regular seatbelt is used. I drive a two door car and expecting a baby in February. When did your kids start being more independent with their seats? I will help him when he needs help and  check it for him before I start driving but it's becoming painful having to practically sit on the floor of my car.

Our son was in a five point until six - I buckled it . Also we then transitioned the seat to the back booster with seat belt , he couldn't reach the buckle so I buckled it until now seven . He got to tall for that seat so he is now in a regular booster and buckles himself. I still adjust the belts at times. Our son is small ( in weight ) and tall so it took awhile for him to transition out of seats. He is going to be in this seat for a long time. But glad he can buckle himself.

My son is 5 year old is out of the 5 point harness (but was able to buckle n unbuckle himself aound 4)  n now regular seatbelt with high back booster he can do it himself .. my reason for having him know how to do it is... God forbid I'm in a car accident and I'm knocked out and can't get him out and I dunno the cars on fire  or filling with water I need him to be able to try to get himself OUT! I'd never be able to live with myself Knowing something happen to him because he was physically able to do it but I never taught him n he was trapped.. we have gone over drills do' n don't.. N he know never to unbuckle while mommy's driving .
