Is burping/winding really essential?

My 1 week old baby is a nightmare to wind. I could spend hours and she'll not burp. Often as soon as I lie her down she will trump like an old man. She hardly ever sicks up and sleeps straight after a feed.

Is this harmful to not wind her?

Is she breastfed? breastfed babies don't burp as much usually because they don't swallow much air. If you try for a few minutes and she doesn't burp, don't worry about it.

I would mention it to the pediatrician at your two week appointment. I couldn't get my baby to burp at all those first two weeks. At first I didn't think it was an issue because it didn't seem to bother her, but in her second week my baby started having episodes where she would vomit, not just spit up, everything she had in her. She was still down a pound from her birth weight at her two week visit. My doctor suggested trying two burp her in the middle of feedings as well and when she broke the latch on her own. That finally worked. I can now get a few burps from her every feeding and she's not vomiting anymore. I'd recommend the multiple burp breaks and talking with the pediatrician.
