Is it rude to ask someone to 'hold on a sec' while you reply to a text?

I'm usually not a rude person but lately I've noticed that whenever I'm having a one on one coffee/lunch/catch up date with a friend or something, everyone decides to text me at that particular time and usually I'll glance at the notification to check whether it's urgent and if so I'll reply and if not then I'll ignore it. Usually the person I'm with will continue telling their story and sometimes I can multitask and listen as well as reply to the urgent message and sometimes that requires more than a simple half a sentence reply then I'll ask them to 'hold on a sec, I have to attend to this, it's urgent'. Is that rude?

I'd say it depends on who's texting you, about what, and how many times you do it while with the friend.

For me, it depends on who the text is from. If the text is urgent and from a family member, spouse, child, or baby/pet sitter go right on ahead and answer it! But if they're talking to another friend while they're out with me then I'd be upset.

No, most people understand that you have lives outside of them. I'm the same way though, everytime I have plans the world seems to implode and my phone starts blowing up. Just answer them but don't be rude to the person you're with.

I do the same thing and sometimes I feel bad about it, however when people do it to me, it doesn't bother me because I get it, some things can't wait and text is more convenient and to the point than a phone call is. Plus I'm not a phone call person.

I absolutely hate when I'm talking to someone & they look at their phone. If it was that important, I'm sure they would call.
