Baby shower probs

I lost my job recently and I'm 6 months pregnant today. His parents want us to throw a baby shower but it all comes out to like 1,200... his mom goes to me "don't worry we will put in the food since we are inviting so many guests" but she doesn't understand that it's not just about food.. if you don't help us with anything else why are you inviting so many ppl. We aren't financially stable enough to do a baby shower it's too much money ... what should we do? who isn't having a baby shower ? Will it be messed up to not do one?
