Educational Assistant?

What does the job require? I've been unemployed for 2 months (left my last nanny job amiably because the mom decided to stay home after they had their second child) and my employers, who are/were teachers, recommended me to their school for this kind of position.

I was studying to be a teacher, but then in a real world application found that I could never be a head teacher because the stress of it flared my lupus too much. But I did love my practicum (student teaching), and think perhaps that being a help in a classroom instead of the big boss would be great!

However, I don't know what that requires in all, as I've never worked in the public school system yet with educational assistants! I'm looking it up online, but I really could use personal experience stories. I was a teachers aide in school, and I'd imagine it being similar to that except more hands on since they wouldn't be my peers and I have more education now to help the other students.

My mother is an educational assistant. She works in a high school with high needs, handicapped children. Her job is hard, scary and emotionally exhausting. The school board that she works for does nothing to protect my mother or her co-workers from violence or abuse. She changes adult diapers, is spit at, hit, kicked and has been held down and punched before.

Mind you she loves this job and she's really great at it.

She has also worked in elementary school where it's not so rough. She worked 1 on 1 with low needs children with learning disabilities in the mainstream curriculum. Its less demanding and less stress.

However! These people get paid less than the janitor and often do A LOT of work (the good ones anyway).

I think it really depends on your personality and what you're really passionate about.
