Anyone use an IUD? (or have used)

My doc is wanting me to use an IUD- anyone here have experience with them? Whats the good, the bad, and the ugly about them?

I've had the copper IUD for about 3 years now. I have a pretty high pain tolerance so I felt one big cramp when it was put in, and cramping for a few hours afterwards (totally bearable). I spotted for about a week after and started getting my period regularly.

Pros: I have not had any pregnancy scares, don't use condoms, doesn't release any hormones.

Cons (of this specific IUD): it's made my periods waaaay heavier and longer (which is common for this type of IUD).

If you are looking to get an IUD that virtually stops your periods, I would suggest the Mirena. It releases very small amounts of progesterone and periods usually stop for people. Some of my friends have told me though that they still feel the symptoms of their periods (ie sore boobs, bloating) around the expected time.

I had one for about 4 yrs. I was on my period for about 35 days after it was first placed. I was highly uncomfortable for about 10 minutes and experienced cramping for about 5 days. I did not have a period for those 4 years. 
It was not as painful when it came out.
