good idea to get a cat with newborn?

I've been wanting a cat and a dog too forever and we just haven't had the right loving situation before until now. Either because of traveling a lot for work or our apartment wouldn't be ideal. Now we live in a bigger apartment in a community with huge fenced areas for dogs and a huge forest nearby and also good for an outdoor cat. 
Our little guy will be almost 4 months and now people are telling me it would be dangerous to get a cat because it can carry diseases and such. What is everyone opinion? Have you had any problems with your cat and newborn?

We have 2 cats and 1 dog.  Our dog Penny, I  nicked named the nanny. She is always by James' side. When he cries, she lets me know by howling. I already know he is crying, so dealing with a dog howling has  been amusing. The cats once in a while snuggle with us. For the most part the cats stay away most of the day. Penny is 5 and the cats Jacob and Molly are 7&8. I would recommend strictly indoor cats. I also have the litterboxes in a place where the baby cant get to.

The first picture was when James was about 4 weeks. He is currently 1 year old.

Get a cat! They are awesome! These two love eachother! My cat will hiss at me for petting her "wrong" but our daughter can pull her tail and kick her in the face and she just sits there. We got a kitten when our daughter was 5 months old!! We also have a 3 year old cat we rescued before she was born. The kitten absolutely adores her!! The older one just ignores her. Haha. I wouldn't have an outdoor cat around my baby though... They have a much, much higher chance of bringing parasites and diseases into your home. Both my cats are strictly indoor kitties and they are much happier and healthier that way!!

It's been suggested that children who grow up in homes with pets have stronger immune systems to allergies. I adopted a kitten about 7 months before I got pregnant. A lot of people told me not to clean his litter box Bc of possible disease, but I was on my own at 20 weeks, so I really didn't have a choice. My dr just told me to use gloves (and a mask if I wanted) when I cleaned the box. My daughter is 6.5 months now and he's fine. She has no allergies to the cat. She's also made friends with our neighbor's dogs, and she's totally fine. I think it's all about education and just knowing what to expect.

I have 3 cats and my son will be 2 weeks old on Tuesday. Most of the time my cats stay away from baby they are scared of him but will occasionally come up to sniff but that's all. The only problem I've had is my youngest kitty (10 months old) will take my son's paci and nipple of his bottles and chew them up so I have to keep them in an area he can't get to

I don't love cats... so I'm not going to pretend I know anything, but the only thing I've read about was that cats sometimes seek warmth and will lay on babies for it. Can be a problem if the little one can't push the cat away from his/ her face overnight.

Our cat mostly ignores the baby. The only real issue we've had is the cat acting out to try to get attention when the baby is nursing and wanting to play during middle of the night feedings.

I do know, though, that it's not recommended to get a kitten when you have a small child.

My cats looove our baby and she loves them. When she comes home from daycare they come running and she has to get out of her seat and pet them for a while. They're definitely annoying sometimes - loud when she's sleeping, demanding when we're trying to relax - but we love them, too.

We have 2 cats and our baby is just fine. We had them before she was born. We take them yearly for shots and deworming. Every cat has their own personality, so take your time to find a good fit for your home.
