Can someone smelling like cigarette smoke harm a newborn baby ?

I wanted to have my mom stay over to help out after I have the baby. I also have a one year old , but she is a smoker and her clothes linger of smoke. Would that be harmful to my newborn baby ?? At five days old my one year old caught RSV and I kind of blame my mom coming over for it because she smokes cigarettes and was coughing. Am I being dramatic , I just don't want my baby to get sick

Yes actually. It's called third hand smoke. It's when the smoke from any tobacco use sticks to your clothing or skin. It can actually cause your baby to be at even more risk for "SIDS". Do your research. It's very important to know these things.

As long as she's not smoking around your baby, it's fine. You can't get RSV from the smell of smoke on somebody.

RSV is a respiratory  VIRUS, not because  of the smell of cigarettes.  NOT saying the smell isnt gross and I wouldn't  allow my child around it. BUT shes not the cause for the poor babies illness.

Second and third hand smoke is just as dangerous as being around the person while they are smoking. Third hand smoke has been linked to many health problems and it causes problems just as fast as first and second hand smoke.

RVS though can't be caught from inhaling smoke.

Smoke can irritate them but RSV is a virus that young babies especially premies are susceptible to but it's not caused by smoke in clothes. If I was worried, I'd just ask my Mom to change her clothes once she gets to your house but I'm if the belief that children should know their grandparents and that grandparents are important, so I wouldn't block my own mother from my kids, I'd work around it.

So people are half right: you can't get RSV from smoke BUT being around smoke damages the cells of the airway and makes babies more prone to getting upper respiratory infections, asthma and dying of SIDS.

When I went to visit a friend who had recently had a baby the nurse told us that third hand smoke is just as dangerous as second or first hand and that if someone smokes than they should change their clothes and was their arms before holding a baby of any age.
