Pissed off MIL.

My son wanted that big green toy. I pulled it out partially for him. I don't want him thinking someone always has to do something for him, so I wanted him to get it the rest of the way. My MIL got up and I said don't help him, in the nicest way possible. She left the room and went to her room. Am I wrong in letting my kid learn to help himself? It's okay she wants treat my kid good, I just wish she wouldn't pass so much judgement and get so upset with how I raise my kid. He is a tough kid just for the record, he picked up a full clothes basket one day and carried it around. so I know he can get that toy.
