mirena strings

So I just got mirena today and I went to look for the strings and I couldn't feel them. Is it possible that I'm just too swollen right now to feel anything? And also, I've been have side pain since I've had it inserted and it doesn't make sense as to why I would also get side pain. It's probably my body just getting used to it, but I'm just curious as to if anyone else has had the same problems. Note: my doctor did an ultrasound to make sure it was in the right spot so I don't believe that it could be from poor placement.
