what is one thing to do and not to do

What is one thing your parents did that you have/will incorporate in you parenting style and one thing you didn't/wont?

Answer

I won't let my children know anything about my finances. If I'm doing well they won't know if I'm broke they won't know. No money conversations in front of kids. They don't need to feel that struggle/responsibility as a child.

My mom was really great about always telling me how much she loved me (because she never heard it as a child) and I definitely make sure I tell my son allllllll the time that I love him. What my mother never did was apologize  if she hurt my feelings or messed up. That always bothered me and I make sure to tell my son sorry if I upset him.

I will try and encourage them to refrain from sex before marriage (I was, up until 2 years ago and I wish I would've continued).

I won't be strict with them. That will only make them rebel and keep things from me.

I wont shelter my kids like mine did. I never knew about life because they always hid it from me. Ya, I'll be doing the opposite.

I won't cook multiple meals and feed into their picky eating habits, my mom did that for us. 
 
I will teach them from as young as possible to clean up after themselves and of course love them unconditionally, even when they're jerks.

Smoking and making sure that my kids got involved in school sports.

I have and will NEVER smoke. It was unfair that my mom smoked while pregnant with me and my sisters (two of us have asthma because of it) and she always smoked inside the house/car when we were growing up. She didn't start smoking outside the house or in her bathroom until my oldest nephew was born.

I'll also make sure my kids are in school sports because it teaches socialization and that exercise and being physically active is important. I have horrible social skills and prefer to be a loner vs. trying to fake a 5 minute 'small talk' conversation that I don't really care about.

Not a thing. I couldn't have had better parents. I may not parent exactly the same as them but there is nothing that I wouldn't do because they did it.
