Animal Testing: What are your thoughts?

While I agree that animal testing is horrible I also think it's a necessary evil. When it comes to drugs and medical devices, animal testing is a necessity until we can find a new method, which in case you were wondering is under works at UPenn. I had the pleasure of meeting the brilliant grad student who developed a prototype to test pacemakers with a computer simulation and it's even more effective at pointing out flaws than a regular trial. However I do think that animal testing for creams and make up is ridiculous and should be illegal. So what are your thoughts on animal testing?

I think they should test on the humans that are in jail and are sentenced to the death penalty.

I am completely against animal testing. They have human cells from donners that they can test their chemicals & products on. Plus animal cells aren't the same as humans cells so animals react differently to products than we do.

Anything medical yes. It's very important, and could potentially save lives, create new medicines and cures. Makeup? Not so much.

I'm in vet school so I get taught all about this stuff. And honestly it's not as evil as its made out to be by the media. It's highly regulated by veterinarians. At least I'm Canada (and I believe the US too) all labs must have a vet on staff in some capacity that is in charge of making sure all basic needs are being met and that no unnecessary harm is caused. I do think finding better ways to test things is great but we've got a long way to go.

From my understanding make up and lotions aren't really tested on animals all that much anymore. Mostly because we've already figured out a lot of what works and what doesn't. But even then there's a lot of rules and hoops to jump through (you should see the paperwork involved in just using a few horses for a basic how to halter and walk a horse handling lab- the paper work for actual research/testing on animals is at least 30X bigger. I wouldn't want to even attempt to fill that out) For example, if you're going to test a product you have to provide significant scientific evidence (theory) that this trial is to the best of your knowledge not going to harm the animal. It's then reviewed by a committee or specialists (not just vets and animal scientists but biochemists, etc as well). Often tests aren't approved right away and further research and non-live animal testing is required or changes to your protocol is needed. You're then allowed to use live animals. But just as it is with people (and often more so actually) if there are too many negative effects (could be as simple as a rash to as serious as fatality) then the trial is stopped. I don't know the exact numbers but they're about 20-100 depending on the type of side effects seen and the type of trial.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't like the idea but I understand the process (somewhat- I'm not an expert) and the reasoning behind it. I can see both sides.

Same as you. For necessary products like medicines and medical devices, I think it's a necessary evil. It shouldn't be allowed for makeup, lotion, etc.

Here's a solution, rapist murderers molesters an just overall terrorist general should be subject to testing for medication, makeup, medical devices and procedures.

Mandatory for murderers and rapist and people on death row. Since ppl don't believe in death penalty any more. Make their dumb asses be experimented on as paying their debt to society

Idk, I've been to an animal testing lab. They killed mice for demonstration, just to show us hey, this is how we do it, we nick the armpit with a scalpel or stick them in the box and turn up the gas. I do think it's necessary for the advancement of medicine but I think killing mice solely for demonstrating how to do it is wrong.
