Copper IUD - pros & cons?

Hey ladies, I'm considering getting the Copper IUD! What are some Pros & Cons? I know it's hormone free but did anyone feel it affected their mental/emotional state anyway?

I had the mirena IUD for 3 years and just got it out last month.

I loved how it lightened my period & was convenient for sex.....BUT after a lot of being in denial, I realized it made my hormones crazy and had me very depressed/anxious/suicidal and I couldn't stand it a day longer.

No mental side effects for me at all. I was on the pill before and it really messed up my hormones as well. After I stopped the pill and had a copper IUD put in, I had cramps the first 5 months the day before my period would start and longer/heavier periods but now it's been 10 months and I have rarely cramps and periods are normal.

Okay, so not one single doctor (of the five or six I saw) will back me up on this that all of these problems were caused by my Paragard IUD (the copper one), but they all started when I got it and stopped when I had it removed:

• Insanely heavy periods (normally were very light)
• Intense cramps
• Crazy mood swings including depressive episodes and irrational anger 
• Bad, vivid dreams
• Hot flashes
• Irritability
• Anxiety
• Super long periods
• Increased feelings of fear
• increased body temperature

I've had my Paragard for 7 months now and I feel better than I ever have on any other bc. I had a lot of anxiety and depression on the pill I had and when I switched it got so much better because it is hormone free and kind of lets your body do its own thing more naturally. The only thing to be aware of is that there will be a little discomfort when getting it in and you may have some cramps after (you might not have any pain at all depending on who you are) and it's also better to get it while you're on your period because your cervix will be more open during that time. You may have more cramping and heavier periods but it's not too bad and you have to be sure to check your strings every few weeks to make sure things are going well. I was scared at first but it worked out great. Good luck :)

Definitely no hormonal side effects. The only downside to me is that I still have to deal with periods! But it hasn't made my periods worse so far.  I actually kind of like that it lets my body do its thing.

No mental side effects. It's the beauty of hormone free BC. :) the copper in the IUD will not interfere with your cycles but it irritates your uterine wall, making periods heavier, longer and a tad more painful (at least for me).
