Putting your sons hair up?

My son is 19 month old and has some fairly long hair and bangs that stay in his face, I will not be cutting his hair until he tells me he wants it cut. But I've been getting very bothered by the bangs in his eyes. I pull his hair up in a little ponytail at home sometimes or a "man bun" and I've been wanting to do it like that when we go out in public but I'm so worried someone will say something about it or think he's a girl (even though you can tell he's not) Suggestions on what to do besides cutting it!
