If you are unhappy in your marriage, should you try to stay together for the sake of your child(ren)?

Unhappy marriages usually negatively impact children because there is a toxic home life. Happily divorced parents don't have the same effect on children by compromising their life in what should be their "safe space."

I think it depends why. Some things are temporary and can be fixed with effort and maybe even professional help, but if you're certain that it can't be saved and you can't see any potential for happiness, it would probably be a lot easier on the kids for the parents to separate. Happy parents apart is better than upset/angry parents together.

All that does is teach the children than an unhappy marriage is okay.

Kids pick up on a lot more than their parents think. They'll see their parents unhappy everyday and see maybe maltreatment towards one parent, and that is never good. If unhappy, it's best to get into counseling and separate I think. Counseling is a tool that I wish was used more often.

Well no.. but IMO you should first try everything together. Work on your marriage together... you married each other for a couple reasons, because you loved them. I think it's important to find that spark back. Of course people change throughout the years but marriage is work, just like every relationship.

But if you've tried everything you could and it's still not bringing you happiness, then it's okay to say we split up (in my opinion of course).

I think demonstrating to children that two adults can be amicable after a split and still love them is very important. My parent's divorce greatly helped my siblings and I develop a sense of self and that we should never have to compromise our happiness.
