Omggg tantrums - any advice??

My 16mo old just started a tantrum phase [ a least I hope it's just a phase] & I am struggling to deal with them. When he doesn't get what he wants or isn't allowed to do something he screams & growls & sometimes throws himself on the floor. I'm really trying to be understanding & help him understand why he can't have that or why he can't do that but I just don't know how. I feel like yelling at him at the stage just doesn't do anything. When he does do it repeatedly I do get frustrated & sometimes yell & tap his lips for screaming. But I do it out of anger instead of out of discipline so I don't think it really helps.. Any tips? How do you handle tantrums at such a young age?
