A twist to the pet vs child debate. What do you think other people would do given no time to think?

Since that old worn out discussion seems to have popped up again, I thought we might discuss it with a bit of a fresh twist.

Instead of asking you what you would do, I'm curious what you think most people would do in the scenario. Imagine there's a child in sudden and immediate peril. Do you think most people would instinctively save the child or their own pet? Or if it helps to put it to some real context - remember real life disasters like 9/11, tsunamis, the Loma Prieta earthquake (in which a double-decker freeway collapsed) People helped each other without even thinking, even when further disaster was imminent and they were risking their own lives to do so.

Personally, I think that almost everyone would instinctively grab for the child. You read stories about this all the time, people running into danger before they can even think about it to save strangers' children, sometimes even to the point of throwing their own bodies over them to shield them from danger. It's a small point of beauty in even the most dire circumstances.
