Can someone give me a bomb ass explanation to tell my bf!!

So my boyfriend and I were talking earlier on FaceTime and asking eachother questions and he asked would I ever have sex raw (we haven't had sex yet we are a fresh couple) and I said no blah blah protection is key. And he said take birth control and I just laughed because im pretty sure there still are chances to get pregnant while taking birth control😂. So can someone explain what exactly birth control is and what it does so I can educate him and maybe even myself for some things I may have not known. Because I never took birth control btw I'm not that sexually active.
