I'm a first time mom, and I'll be having my baby in December, but I just wanted to know, when you all were in labor did you all get an epidural or no? I don't really know what I should do because of the side effects they say an epidural has. What did you guys choose? & how was it?

Yes, get it. It makes labor so much easier and you may even actually enjoy your experience after you get it. I got it and felt nothing while it was being administered, not even a pinch. And I still felt when it was time to push (pressure like you have to take a big poop) and I didn't tear or need stitches but if I would have I wouldn't have felt a thing! It was amazing! And it wore off fairly quickly after I gave birth so I was up and moving around.

I didn't, but I really think you have to do what's best for you and what makes the process go easier for you.   What works for others might not work for you.

I was induced on a Friday afternoon due to low amniotic fluid (unknown cause) and had cervadil and pitocin. I had prepared for a natural birth studying Ina May Gaskins writings and Hypnobirthing, doing prenatal yoga and hiking and having all my props, my well trained husband, and my essential oils at the hospital. My birth plan asked the hospital staff to NOT offer me pain medication, but that I would ask if I needed it.  The staff was fantastic and incredibly accomodating. Welp. I finally asked for the epidural on Sunday morning. I could not go on any longer.  I was only 5cm despite back to back strong contractions and lots of pitocin. Turns out the position of the baby was occiput posterior. I labored for 12 more hours and then pushed for 2.5 hours after the epidural. TOTALLY different experience and wayyyyyy easier. Night and day. Apples and oranges. The epidural took my pain away. I was aware of the contractions but they no longer hurt. They were like mild menstrual cramps. I think labor would have happened faster if I had asked for the epidural earlier.  It allowed my body to progress. Once the epidural was in I want from 5cm to 10cm fairly rapidly.

I didn't bc I couldn't due to back surgeries I've had but I would have.  It was undescribable.  I'd recommend getting an epidural!!!

Talk to your doctor about your concerns. But if it's something you want or need once you go into labor then I don't think you should worry about the small chance of having a complication later. There's lots of stories of people getting epidurals and everything going fine. I don't know what percentage of people who get epidurals have problems later but your doctor probably does. Everyone shares a story of warning if something goes wrong, people who have successful epidurals skip over that part.
