My two week long birth story-sorry it’s long!

Kate

It all started during the week of August 25th. The whole week leading up to the 25th, my ankles were huge. But being 32 weeks pregnant, it was just gonna happen. Well my husband had a work function on Friday, the 25th and we were to be walking- a lot 😑. During the function, I sat down as much as I could. At the end of the night, I was exhausted. When we got home I crawled into bed and fell asleep. My husband was leaving to go to Las Vegas in the morning for a work conference and he would return on Thursday the 31st. I woke up around 11:45 pm (still Friday) to go to the bathroom. When I pulled my underwear up, they were wet. Being half asleep, I thought I peed myself. I went and got another pair of underwear. When I stood up again, it was wet again. Finally on the third pair, I thought to put a pad on because something didn’t seem right. I woke my husband up and called the doctors. By this time, I checked the pad and the fluid was pinkish. My doctor said to head to the hospital to get checked out. He didn’t sound concerned, so why would we? We just got dressed and headed to the hospital.

We get there and just let them know what’s going on and all. They take me in the back and hook me up for a “stress test” and bring my husband back with me. A resident comes in and checks my cervix, looks up at me and says,

“Well, your water ruptured and you’re In labor. You’re not leaving. You could be having this baby tomorrow.” Now my husband and I just look at each other and think how can this be happening, I’m only 32 Weeks?!?!

All night long I was having contractions, but I wasn’t feeling them. The nurses would come in and wake me up saying you’re not feeling any of this? I’d say no and just go back to sleep. My doctor came in the next morning and told me What was happening. He said we’re not gonna stop the labor, since you’re not dilated at all. We’re gonna five you the steroid shots to develop his lungs and put you on antibiotics in case of infection. You’re goal is to not have this baby for 2 Weeks. Once we get to 34 Weeks, the risk of infection is greater if we keep him in.

So I spent two whole weeks in the hospital. My poor husband slept on the sofa bed in the room and left for work all day to come back and be with me. My parents, in-laws, and family all came up to visit. My mother thought I was getting depressed (I wasn’t allowed out of bed except to go to the bathroom and take a quick shower. I wasn’t allowed to go outside at all.) Then on September 6th my doctor said tomorrow is the day, we’re inducing you at 12:00 am.

They wheeled me over to my new room, hooked me up to the monitors, gave me the pill to start labor-then told me I couldn’t drink anything 😑. The pill did absolutely NOTHING. So when my doctor came in around 9:30 am. They hooked me up to pitocin and I was feeling some pain. I got my epidural, but I was only 3 cms around 3:30 pm. It was going to take long-or so my doctor thought. My wonderful nurse said let’s try this, a peanut ball (google them! They’re crazy effective.) between my legs. I laid there for an hour and woke up crying hysterically around 4:20 pm. I thought that my epidural wore off and I was just at 4 cms. My nurse said I shouldn’t be feeling anything and my epidural was still working but she called the doctor. She came in and checked me at 4:30- I was at 10 cms!😳 I dilated 7 cms in an hour. It was time to push.

I pushed for 7 sets of 3 and my son was here at 4:57 pm. I was able to see him and touch him for

1 minute only and then he was taken to the NICU. He’s now two weeks old and is still there, but he’s doing great. He only has to work on his feeding and he’ll be home. So when he gets older, I get to tell him how he tried to come 8 Weeks early, but mommy was just as stubborn as he and kept him in for two extra weeks.

He weighed 4 lbs, 9 oz at birth.

Now 4lbs 15 oz.
