I know my husband's biggest motivator is completing increasingly more difficult challenges and rising through the ranks. It's not really about the money for him, though his wages are certainly a perk, it's about the sense of pride and accomplishment. He loves hearing from his family how proud they are of him.

If you're at a job you hate, yeah. It's probably the only thing keeping you there. 
But if you work for a non-profit, or you're a social worker, teacher, etc. that doesn't get paid much, then you probably do it because you like it.

I've seen some research on this. Money is a motivator in taking a job, but it isn't a major motivator in performing well in one. Studies have shown that people adjust their lifestyles (spending) very quickly when they receive raises, so they end up feeling just as lacking/wanting as they did before a raise. That is, if you get a $5000 raise, your household will quickly adjust to just spending $5000 per year more, and you won't really feel any richer.

Rather, it's been shown that if employees feel that their values/goals align with the company's and those of their coworkers, they will stay much more motivated and loyal to their jobs. Zappos, Patagonia, and WhiteWave are companies that understand this well, among others.

This is certainly true for me. I left a consulting job, because I started feeling like the work I was doing didn't align with my personal ethics. I left despite the fact that my yearly bonuses and raises were about a third of my already satisfactory salary.

Yes for me at least right now. Lol im a full time student working at walmart. Me and my husband are only working to save money to buy land at the end of the year and to build a house within the next four years. To even get me through the day is to think of how bad i really want that land. Lol. I even go visit (an hour and a half hour drive) our future 2 acres to get more motivated hahaha

For my regular job I like money. It pays the bills! Its definitely a motivator. But when I was considering careers I went through all the jobs and thought a lot about what I would be happy doing for free. So the job I chose is one I would be happy to do for free so its a great perk getting money.
But I also volunteer 70 hrs per month teaching people the bible and I find that way more fulfilling to do than going and getting paid.
