Societal pressure interfering with knowledge?

Is societal pressure to be politically correct interfering with out ability to grow as a population and become more knowledgeable? Or is it helping us become more aware of our sorroundings?

Answer

A little of both. Personally, I'm not a fan of all the labels and classifications that have become so common. On one hand, they may promote awareness. But on the other hand, I feel like it causes a lot of division.

I think it's helping with awareness. We don't have to fit in anyone's little box of how they think we should be.

I think it has been necessary since we have lost the values of respect and empathy in interpersonal dealings in our hyper-individualistic culture.

One 'politically correct' thing I have strayed from is the 'proper' references for white people or black people or anyone else. I just use what the cultures use, Indian, First Nations.. Etc. 
I have no reason to bring it up in normal conversation. But if I'm describing someone then I will include that detail. Just because is seems stupid to be describing someone and be saying she has 'straight black hair.. Brown eyes..' When 'she's Chinese' would immediately give the proper description. 
I grew up in a place where it was considered wrong to mention peoples background. I decided as an adult that there is no reason not to.

I would assume it's helping us be aware. Just because we attempt to be politically correct in some places, doesn't mean we even attempt at all out side of those situations. So I wouldn't be to worried about one or the other.
