Just saying.....

Why when people have siblings but only share one parent they call them their half brother or sister?????

I mean which half is your sister and which is not, are they a half person? No so why can't you just say my brother or sister????

I'm only asking because my kids have a sister from their dad but they just say sister, but when other people address it they would say half sibling, and that kinda annoys me, I've heard a lot of people address their siblings that way also, I've always wondered about that.

My half sister has half a brain (and that's being generous). We do NOT get along. I generally refer to her as my half sister to specify that I do not consider her to be a blood relative. The half is "she is legally my sister."

For me it totally depends on the relationship. I don't have a relationship with my half siblings. When we lived in the same house we had a terrible relationship. Blood only counts for so much when people treat you like shit.

I only call them my half siblings if I'm explaining it.

If someone asked me how many siblings I have, I say 7. But if they are taken aback by the number or if they inquire more, I have one sister, one half brother, and 5 step siblings. I think it's best to teach your child that family is family, regardless of defining terms like step, half, etc. some people just don't leave well enough alone

My sister and I have different dads. I was literally in my late teens before I realised that some people might refer to her as my "half sister". It never occurred to me. We shared the same womb (11 years apart) and she used to babysit me and change my nappies as a baby. She's my sister. No halves about it 😊

I never refer to my brother as my "half brother" just because we have different dads.

I'm totally with you on this. My dad has 7 kids- and to us, we are all brothers and sisters.  We don't even add the half.  My father taught us to fight and stick up for each other without partiality. It bugs me too to hear "half" sister or brother.  It could be because my family is close though... Who knows.

My oldest brother is my half brother, but my middle brother and I call him our brother. Unless we were explaining our family dynamics to someone. :)

All I have are half siblings. I call them brothers and sisters unless I am discussing our actual blood relationship. For genealogical purposes, they are half siblings.
