Being a victim of rape in an abusive home I've come to realize I can handle just about anything. I was a little over weight due to the stress of the situation but as soon as I was freed and able to treat myself properly I lost it. I had never taken care of my hair on my own because my abuser loved that privilege and wanted it to be straight and processed, I now have a full head of thick beautiful curls. I never had a job because I was to be in the house at all times , I am now working. My abuser loved my skin and wanted to take care of it himself, since being freed I am still glowing and golden. I didn't know how to do basic things like handle money, budget, do taxes or open a bank account because he refused to teach me, I now stuff my kitchen full of groceries, I opened a bank account, I did my taxes on my own, pay all my bills and fee's , budget what I'm spending so I know to find the greatest deal, and I still have some left over to enjoy plus use to get to work. Most of all I was afraid to speak in his presence or in the home period. I always felt I would be shot down for how "stupid" I sounded because my guardians never actually believed I possessed any knowledge, I graduated , I may not have physically attended college but I took as many online courses for literature and grammar as I could to improve my poetry and other writing. I AM A POET. I am now NEVER afraid to speak.

Despite the hardships in my life I've always tried to heal myself because I knew no one else could do it. Even though I was broken beyond all faith, feeling hopeless, and wanting to give up I kept going. Yes I am still a little broken but I've been picking up the pieces, rebuilding myself , and letting go. The pain encouraged me to be better for myself and the people I love. I am a woman and no matter what is to happen in the future I know I'll handle it with strength and poise. My name is Imani Zhante Davis and I can't be stopped.
