Traumatic Birth

Danielle

Let start off by saying I am so grateful for the birth of my son, but it was not easy for either of us. Last Saturday my husband and I were out and about all day due to the fact that the ceiling in our kitchen collapsed last Thursday night. Saturday I slacked on my water intake and I was severely dehydrated. I thought I was going into labor due to crazy contractions. I was admitted to the hospital overnight for fluids and observation. My OB saw me in the morning and told me that I was not in labor and if anything I was only dilated 1 cm. I was discharged. Then Sunday all day I relaxed and pretty much slept trying to get through the continued searing pain in my back. Finally around 4 am Monday morning I called the emergency line and another OB in the practice told me to go back to the hospital. We got there around 5:30 and by 7:20 the doc checked me and broke my water. I also got stadol in an iv for the pain around 10:30 and I was able to sleep for an hour or so. By noon the OB came back and told me that I was now 4 cm dilated. The pain came back something fierce and I asked for a c-section. I knew something was really not right. He told me that I couldn’t just get a section because I was in pain but that he would have the epidural administered quickly. Once I got that, I slept until 5 pm. At that time I was fully dilated and ready to go. (No pitocin). The OB guesses that my son was posterior and that was the cause of the spinal pain. I got some more on the epidural and pushed and pushed. Around 7 another OB from my practice showed up, so I had two docs with a myriad of nurses and my husband trying to get me through labor. They told me early on that they could see the head and it ships the be too long. By 7:30 something was not right. My OB told me that he was going to use the vacuum to help my little man out. On the last attempt with the vacuum I was aware that everyone was super concerned and they had THE OR on standby Incase this last push didn’t work. Luckily, my little man with my push and the vacuum was out. The other OB approaches with scissors and I assumed that I was going to be cut right before he was all out. But no, my son had a tight nuchal cord. Where it was wrapped all around his neck. He wasn’t crying and he was placed super briefly on my chest and then whisked away to get him to cry. My baby was so pale. After what seemed like hours, he cried but they reluctantly placed him on me for a few minutes before whisking him away to the transitional nursery. And then shortly after the NICU. Bradley was not premature born at 39 +1. But the cord issue made things hard for him. He was born Monday June 4 at 8:03 pm and was not discharged until Friday, June 8th. Thank god he seems fine but we were both traumatized.
