Would you have a home birth with your first?

I’m 27+4 today and I was just thinking of having a homebirth however, I have people trying to scare me out of it. Sadly, it’s working. 😞 just wondering if any of you mommas have had an at home birth with your first. If so, did everything go well? If it didn’t, what were the issues? Is your baby okay?

The problem with home births is that so much is unknowable before you go into labor, and other people’s experiences won’t help you. I had the picture of a healthy pregnancy, a really fast and easy labor, and then he just never descended into the birth canal despite hours of pushing. I ended up with an emergency c section. In my case, I would have been fine at home until pretty much the minute I wasn’t and then we would have had a huge emergency situation. My point being, I couldn’t have predicted I would need a c section. You won’t be able to either. 
However a lot of women have natural births and nothing goes wrong. That also isn’t an indication of what your birth will be like.
Having a home birth depends on your tolerance for risk. Remember, risk just means their is the potential for bad things to happen, not that bad things will or won’t happen for sure. But homebirth is very risky, lots of potential to go wrong. Figure out if accepting these risks are ok with you.

I had a home birth and I absolutely loved it! I felt at ease in the comfort of my own home, there was no stress or concern about transferring anywhere after. I got to hold my baby and laze in my own bed all day with her. I had the freedom to move around, if I wanted a shower I could, if I wanted to use the birth tub I could, if I wanted to lay in bed I could. Everything I wanted was nearby, no need to stress about forgetting to pack something. My daughter was born in her room and I think that’s beautiful. The atmosphere was calming and supportive, rather than a hospital feel. I feel it would be more intimate than a hospital birth, but I can’t personally compare as I’m a ftm lol. But I truly loved my home birth and would easily do it again!

I would absolutely love to have a homebirth. My only real “issue” is the nearest hospital with maternity is about 30 minutes away and I would not be and to transfer there if I needed to. For low risk women, a homebirth is a fantastic idea with a trained midwife! People are afraid of what they don’t know. Unfortunately birth has been turned into a medical event, these days, and women are no longer trusting their bodies and their instincts. This completely changes the dynamics of labor. Could an issue arise, sure, but if you have an experienced midwife, usually they’ll be able to work around most things on their own and will have a great plan in place if more care is needed. The maternal mortality rate hasn’t skyrocketed in this country because of homebirths...think about that.

It's doable but it takes some planning and help. You'll want to hire a good doula and midwife that do home births and it might be hard to find ones this far along that aren't already booked up depending on your area

I would not because god forbid something happened I wouldnt be able to forgive myself. You can say no to IVs and anything you dont want at the hospital. Better safe then sorry! I am just glad that we can choose home or hospital and as long as mama and baby are okay!

Definitely!! I had a home birth with my first and wouldn't change a thing. I had a very knowledgeable midwife who was very capable of handling any emergencies that came up including transferring me if the need arose. I wasn't the least bit worried at all and I highly recommend it to anyone. Just be sure you find a midwife you trust and work well with and you will be fine!

Home births are way better than hospital births. You fell safe and comfortable in your own home and you can get in your tub and the midwife will do everything they will even start your sheets afterwards. It’s just so much easier!

I had both of mine at a birthing center with just a midwife, and loved it. Now that I know what to expect from my body, I would maybe consider a home birth. I feel like with the first there are too many unknowns, so I'd probably chicken out.

Had my first in a hospital and just had our second as a homebirth on Friday. Homebirth was great! As log as you have a healthy pregnancy, homebirth is safer than the hospital because you won't get unnecessary interventions. Have you seen "The Business of Being Born"? I had my husband watch it. He didn't like the idea the whole way through, but afterwards said he's definitely sold on waterbirth at least. I also didn't want any infection risks from being at a hospital. There are more and more drug resistant infections out there. The Bradley Method of Childbirth was a great read and anything by Ina May Gaskin. Ultimately, it's your birth and you get to decide what is right for you :)
