Is it all right to run “honesty” tests on business employees?
Answer the title for the poll but read for elaboration first.
I’m watching a video where a reporter runs an “honesty test” on car wash workers. He places hidden cameras in his car and sets a bottle of Vicodin and a $20 bill on the floor of the car. He then watches the footage afterward to see if the employees take the items. Many do, but some don’t. He shows the video of those who do to the owners and the employees who steal are fired. He posts the video of the employees stealing, getting confronted, and then getting fired without their faces blurred on YouTube.
Many people took offense to this “honesty test” in the comments because they said it felt like a setup to tempt already low-paid workers.
Here is one viewpoint:
“Hey let’s tempt poor struggling minimum wage workers with money and see if they take it so we can get them fired since we’re rich and bored.”
Here is another:
“Do you want easily tempted people working for your business? Low wages are no excuse to steal from people’s cars.” Basically saying if they were the car wash owner they would have no issue with the honesty test as it would show them which employees could and could not be trusted.
What are your thoughts on this? Is it okay to “tempt” employees with items to see if they will steal them? Does it make it worse that the man filmed it and put it online with the employees’ faces fully shown, or is it the responsibility of the employees to be honest and do the right thing regardless? Are these “tests” cruel and unnecessary? Would you personally run a “test” like this?
