Do you think we should let people suffer if they won't remember it?

I was talking with my grandma about the nurse refusing to give my son a low dose of morphine as a last resort for pain management (for those who are unaware, my son is four days post op from open heart surgery, when this occurred he was three days post op). He's only 9 months old so of course he won't remember it, but my grandma posed this rhetorical question to me last night when I was discussing things with her. I found it to be an interesting question.

Should we let people suffer if they won't remember it?

Why or why not?
