Hitting children?

Question

What do you all think? I’m a huge advocate of non violence and I hate the thought of parents hitting their children, even lightly. I’d love to have daleels (religious texts or fatawa) about this topic if you ladies know of any

To my knowledge, hitting for discipline is permissible. But not beating and not abuse.  To injure a child is a very sinful thing to do. 
I personally don’t even shout. My husband is abusive so I (try to) ensure a zero aggression atmosphere around my son.

I think there are many more effective ways to discipline a child and teach them right for wrong. Smacking or hitting would be an absolute last resort and something I hope never to have to do.
Islamically, speaking I think what Xig said is right. It is permissible but not preferred.
