YAVIS privilege

So we’ve all heard of white privilege and male privilege. Today I learned of a new job term I wasn’t aware of-YAVIS.

Yavis stands for young, attractive, verbal, intelligent and successful.

Basically, if you have these qualities, you’re more likely to benefit than those who don’t, like when getting appointments.

A sociologist did a study on getting mental health appointments. She had scripts written out for voice actors to call therapists and read from, pretending to be someone trying to make a therapy appointment. “If her experiment were to play out in the real world, an identifiably black, working-class man would have to call 80 therapists before he was offered a weekday evening appointment. A middle-class white woman would only have to call five.”
