Would you get mad if?

So today my husband and I found a cat wandering around. Very friendly, sweet and affectionate. It was very clear that he was not a stray. We called a local animal shelter and they picked him up, and after we posted in a neighborhood group saying that if anyone knew whose cat it was, where he was. Someone decided to comment and say how they would never do that because it costs too much to get the cat back and blah blah blah.

Turns out, this is a cat who his let out to wander all the time. The owner was contacted and called the shelter. Someone else seemed annoyed that we did that as well. There have been a slew of lost animals in our area lately, so we were concerned.

So, would you be mad that someone called the cat in and had it taken to a shelter for safety? I almost feel stupid now because of some of the comments, but I would be distraught if I knew my animal was missing and people just posted pictures of it and didn't actually do anything about it.

We were trying to do the right thing, but this cat was not chipped, nor had a collar. I am going to assume that the owner is annoyed because he let's his cat out and now he has to pay to get it back, and really, I just feel silly because of how some people acted.

So, what is your take on the right thing to do? Leave an animal alone, post a picture and hope the owner can canvas the neighborhood and one day find it? Or would you be ok knowing someone called it in and have to pay a fee for return, even though you let the cat out every day and he is basically an outside cat?
