Mice are making me a prisoner in my own home!

Ok so, I've been living in my apartment for a year and a few months. I've had roommates in the past who claimed mice lived in the apartment but I never actually saw the mice so I thought they were just being paranoid. Anyway, my roommate got a cat and that was the last I heard of it. My roommate moved out a month ago, and just a few days ago I started hearing mice and flipped out! I put in an online request to my apartments to exterminate with an extremely high priority but haven't heard back. It's been 3 days! Anyways just now, I went in the living room to watch TV and saw a mouse climbing my curtain!! 😐 I'm literally freaking out right now, even though I'm being irrational since I know they're more scared of me. Does anyone know of any humane way to help keep them at bay while I wait for the exterminator? My hubby bought a glue trap and one of the mice got caught and started squeaking so loud I felt bad for it :/
