Grades & Grounding?

Hello, my daughter is 9 and recently brought home the worst progress report I’ve ever seen (D’s & one Failure.) I’m not sure what to do, I’ve always been very involved in her school work and pretty much up her ass about everything to be honest. We do have a split family but her father and I have a great co-parenting relationship. We’ve talked to her teacher and she has told us that our LO is spacing out in class, just kind of absent although she’s present. I’ve asked my daughter what’s going on as well and she has no answer, I just don’t know what to do here. I took away her privileges here & dad took away trick-or-treating at their home tonight. Just looking for some feedback & advice as what to do to make her get back on the right track and boost her confidence!

I don’t have kids so not speaking from experience there, but instead as a teacher.
What were her grades like before? I’d show her a previous report card and ask her what had changed. I personally wouldn’t go down the punishment route as there might be something going on in school that she’s not wanting to talk about yet. If she thinks she’s been bad it might make her close up even more whereas if she knows you’re on her side she might open up

Maybe find out whats distracting her and give her a chance to fix it before grounding her. Maybe something is bothering her or she needs something more challenging.

Almost this exact thing happened with my 9 year old daughter. Difference is she’s always been easily distracted with things she doesn’t want to do. I had put her in a singing class before school started in the Fall and she loves it. I told her before the progress report came that if she had anything under a C, I would take her out because school is more important. 
She had a D in math, I took her out of singing, and told her that she would have to prove her dedication when the final report card came to get back into it. She brought up her grade, so I guess that worked.

I have a 9yr old son and if his grades started to fall I would be questioning what happening at school.. is she getting bullied or has any worries on her mind? My son can bottle things up at times and if something happened at school he doesn’t always tell me straight away especially when comes to kids being mean.. I wouldn’t punish her for the grades falling especially if this has never happened before. 
Obviously something changed in her little world and maybe she doesn’t feel like she wants to share it with you just yet hun. How long has the teacher noticed that she been spaced out and not all there, days, weeks or months I would be on there back, asking them how it’s got to this point of her failing and you only just found out from her grade results. They should of noticed straight away she not working to her best ability and notified you..

She could be bored of the class i had a b grades till middle school then they his d and f levels because i was honestly bored and prefered reading over listening to the five hundred teachers i had. Just let her know 1 slip up is ok but if it continues then its something at school or could be a home too that is bothering her or something simple as somthing someone said once that is still in her mind. Amd maybe an after school activity might help something to focus on like soccer or swim or girl scouts!

Maybe she’s acting out because somethings bothering her or she has depression. I was bullied and my grades started failing and I was depressed but never told my parents. Also if she wants to go trick or treating super bad I would let her. I love Halloween and it’s a time for fun and family.

Our nine year old was evaluated for ADHD last year.  We went through the school system which was lame (they can’t diagnose).  
The staring off could be the inattentive form of ADHD.  If my son has it, he has the inattentive form as well.  He reads books when he should be listening in class.  His grades are suffering as well...but his teacher doesn’t want to punish him for reading.
