How long did you breastfeed only?

I'm about to have a baby and I have no clue when to start giving the baby food. Just curious what is best.

It’s typically recommended to wait until 6 months to introduce solids. But breast milk should still be the primary source of nutrition, as in the beginning they are just learning about different textures, tastes, how to swallow food, etc.

4 to 6 months is whats recommended, my daughter showed a lot of interest in food early so we started introducing small amounts of food at 5 months. I think its best to follow your babies lead!

We started introducing solids a couple of weeks before six months, baby was EBF until then. We plan to breastfeed alongside solids until at least one year. We chose baby led weaning which is moving straight to finger food rather than spoon feeding purées. Some early foods were roasted skin on sweet potato, avo, steamed broc, pb mixed with banana or porridge, stewed apple, steamed carrot. Main pros of BLW is development of mouth muscles which aids eating and speech, learn to control their own appetite and to stop when they are full. Cons is that the gag reflex is stimulated a lot in the beginning while they work things out, so lots of retching and gagging which can be scary. Some people have strong opinions on BLW vs purees but just do your research and stick with what works for you mama. Good luck!

We started purées at about 3.5 months. EBF until then. He seemed ready because he was interested in our food when we ate, has always had supernatural control of his head/neck, etc. now at 6 months he’s eating a really wide variety of food and just starting to experiment with finger foods. He was also underweight (according to his doctor, not just my opinion) and solids were recommended to help put on weight.

I feel this is a good question for your doctor but also have some outside advice... as a parent I waited till our daughter was 5.5 months old to introduce baby food. I did this only because my husband was getting home from deployment and wanted him to finally be a part of something. But the typical age is anywhere between 4-6 months. For table food we started once she got a tooth or two, seemed interested in what we were eating and we started on soft veggies/fruits and such. This was probably around 8-9 months.
As a day care teacher who worked with infants we start baby food between the 4-6 month range and as long as the child could sit in a chair and had head and neck support. With table food we waited till they had at least one or two teeth and gave soft foods again.
