Does your job owe you time off when you correctly request it or can they deny you?

Question

So theoretically if you request time off for your job and do it based on how they specicify you should, like a week or two in time, do you feel they have the right to deny your request or since you requested off correctly that they should give it to you. Does it depend on the job or why you requested off? This isnt actually happening to me, but I heard my job doesnt want anymore requests this year. Wanting to hear other opinions.

It can be denied because 1. Too many people already have requested off around that time resulting in short staff. 2. It’s during a very busy time for the company. 3. No coverage for you...they always have a right to deny.

I'm a nanny, I work for a family so they have all the power in how I get time off, but they are amazing and as long as I give them as much time as possible they make it work. 
but I also have worked for big corporations and even though I have a two week form they still denied it. it's frustrating but they can do what they want. they don't owe it to me, I work for them.

There are probably too many people requesting time off for the holidays. They are definitely allowed to deny you

I used to ask asap, if more than one person asked for the same time off then the second person wouldn’t always get it off. 
My ex (my daughters father) can’t have any time off during December. He works in retail and its the busiest time of year. When i worked in a restaurant they hardly ever gave people days off in December unless we could find someone who was willing to swap shifts.

For my job, you can submit requests (usually preferred 2 weeks in advance at least), but if the dates would be overlapping with someone elses leave, an important work day, or when we would be understaffed, they'll deny it. We get a promised week of vacation/sick a year I don't know if that could be denied though.
