What to get for someone elses one year old?

They're having a birthday party for the baby (turning one) and I was invited. I'm not super close to them but obviously want to get baby something, just don't know what to get as I'm not super close to them so I don't know what they have or what babe likes. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks

I usually get clothes or books for little ones. They end up with so many toys I don’t want to contribute too much to that, but I think every kid should have a growing library of books and most can still use more clothes than they have, although some are overrun with clothes too if they have parents or grandparents who love buying them clothes.

I always liked when people gave my kids money or new books, because everyone brings toys, we've put our boys money from holidays and birthdays in a savings account.

I was in this situation last month. I got an  automatic bubble thing from Kmart for like 5 bucks. And sure enough when I walked into the party they were blowing bubbles all that made me feel like I made a good choice. And it wasn't a crazy investment. It's supposed to be about your presence not you presents right?

I always say don’t buy my kids toys. They have enough toys and barely use them. On my sons first birthday he got so many toys and he’s about to turn two in July and they have barely been touched. :/ 
I would have loved it if somebody bought him clothes or something like that though. Because they go through SO MANY clothes at that age and they would have been gotten so much more use. 
Anyway for my sons 2nd birthday I am going to ask that if people insist on bringing a gift that it be an experience. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It could be a voucher to the zoo or a trip to the playground. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Something he will enjoy a lot more then some random ass toy. Because let’s face it. At that age NOONE KNOWS what to get them. Not even there own parents. Even the KID doesn’t know what kind of things they like. 😂 so they end up with a bunch of stuff they barely play with. They like the wrapping paper more. 
Anyway. I know you asked for ideas. So if I was to buy a one year old a toy. I would buy things like.
- a ball
- bath toys
- bubble machine. 
Ect. Basic things that don’t cost a tonne of money.

My favorite that my son got was a little tonka truck he could peddle around. There's also learning toys.
