Late period

I'm 12 days late for my period, but I just started getting my period again after having my baby and breastfeeding. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I really want to be pregnant and I feel like I might be getting my hopes up because I know your first periods can be irregular. What was your experience with periods after pregnancy and breastfeed. I am still breastfeeding too if that makes any difference.
