Bedtime?

Question

My husband and I got into an argument about when time our kids should lay down for bed, we have a 12 yr old and 4 yr old and he thinks they should be able to stay up until they fall asleep where ever they do but I think our 4 yr old should lay down around 9-9:30pm and our 12 yr old 10-10:30pm but every time I says time for bed he gets pissy and says they don’t need to go to bed yet they can stay up.

I agree with setting bed times for those ages. Kids usually need structure and I know 12 year old me would have never gotten sleep if I could decide my own bedtime. Maybe your husband needs to spend time with a sleep deprived four year old and preteen to understand the necessity.

Kids need structure and large amounts of sleep. I remember a time when my bedtime was 7:30. It wasn’t 10 until I was 16, although I had some serious leeway during summer break by that time.  Besides, how are you supposed to get some adult time when the kids are running around at all hours because they feel like it?  
I do know some parents who compromise by requiring children to be ready for bed and in their rooms by a certain time, but allow them to read or do other quiet activities.

As an elementary teacher, please have a bedtime!!!! Kids NEED sleep. I have one little girl this year who literally breaks down crying over the littlest things and falls asleep at her desk. She tells me she usually goes to be around 11:30 but she doesn’t have an actual bedtime.

I’m sorry but what parent isn’t begging for bedtime?? I love my kid more than life itself but by 5:00 I’m ready for his bedtime cause I’m exhausted... kids thrive on routines so that’s why we have a bedtime. And for my sanity.

I put my son to bed by 7:30 weeknights and 8pm weekends. He’s 2. If I let him just fall asleep wherever, we’d all be in for a miserable night and morning. Tonight he was bouncing off the walls but I put him in his bed anyway and said goodnight. When I left, he settled down and fell asleep within 15 minutes. The young ones don’t realize how tired they really are until given the opportunity for sleep.

My 4 year old is in bed by 7 and sleeps through till 7. I was always in bed by 7 as a kid and it wasn't till I was 12 I started going to bed at 10. Kids should be up early to make the most of each day and in bed early  IMO. Gosh, the earlier you get them to bed the better chance you have for some you time

And 7mo old three of them go to school i send them to bed 8 or 8:30pm all 4 cause by that time baby is sleeping already if your kids are going to school yes you are right to have them a schedule to go to bed

Your 4yr old especially needs a good sleep routine which includes a consistent bedtime.

My almost 14 yr oldans 12 yr old are in bed by 830 and can read until 930 if they want. They get up with me to go to the sitter when I work at 645. Same time during school. The weekends we don't police it as much. 16mo is in bed between 8 and 830. No matter what. Same when I have my niece and nephew, in bed by 830. They are 4 and 6. It doesn't hurt to have a routine. He needs to chill out or I'd be like ok night, You can deal with them lol.
