For those who struggle with anxiety, did medication help?

I’m finally going to the doctor today to talk about the social anxiety I’ve had my entire life. Not sure if she will give me medication or have me talk to someone. I’m so tired of feeling like this.

I have a panic/ situational anxiety issue so I have days where I am totally fine. I’ve been on everyday anxiety meds (celexa) and it worked great but I didn’t like how it made me feel so i switched to something more “as needed” (Xanax). I found treating the sources of my anxiety as opposed to covering them up with medication worked much better. I went to therapy and that helped greatly in knowing what triggers the anxiety and panic so I know how to diffuse the situation and if I can’t I can take my meds. Definitely find something that works the best for you and don’t be afraid to ask to change meds if you don’t like the one you’re taking.

In my experience, it helped while I was on it, but when I stopped taking it it almost felt worse than it did before, at least at first.

I have severe anxiety and I am prescribed a blood pressure medication to manage it. It helps with the initial panic by slowing your body’s flight or fight response so you have a chance to react rationally. It definitely does not get rid of the anxiety, but it stalls that sick/sweaty/fast heartbeat thing enough to usually avoid a panic attack. I’ve always had social anxiety and that has not changed, but the medication takes the edge off. Therapy is still really important because you have to know what you can do to manage your anxiety once the initial panic is settled. I also have Xanax for when I can’t control it. Sometimes with social anxiety you have to fight through it, and sometimes you have to give yourself permission to not do what makes you uncomfortable. Find people who understand.

I think medication is a great resource and is needed for certain people but understanding the source of your anxiety and how to cope with it is the best long term treatment. It can be so hard to admit that we need help sometimes so good for you for seeking treatment!!! That is the first step to a happier and healthier life!

I had anxiety after I had my baby, and they prescribed me Zoloft. Three weeks after I started taking it I suddenly felt sooo much better. It’s definitely worth it in my opinion
