D and C question

I unfortunately decided to schedule a DnC for Thursday. Last week we were told that our little one stopped growing a week and a half prior and had no heartbeat. I wanted to see if my body would realize on its own that I was no longer pregnant but after a week the waiting game and the not knowing when was too mentally difficult.

My question is were you completely anesthetized or where you sedated a different way. I read somewhere (probably a bad idea) that they sometimes do it with an epidural. That thought terrifies me as I had a natural birth with my 15 month old because the thought of a needle going into my back was completely terrifying to me.
