How to explain death to my daughter?

This is something I have struggled with for almost all of my life, and I’m not sure how to explain it to my child. We are not religious, but we are not against a higher power, if that makes sense? Any suggestions, negative or not, are very helpful.

We lost my brother at a young age and my mum taught me when someone is poorly the angels come and take them to a hospital in the sky and when they get there all of their illnesses disappear and theyre better again. And once their better they stay in the sky to make sure the family is happy and healthy and when we need them they come down to us to help us. But if they were to stay here on earth their illnesses would come back so it’s better for them to stay in the sky

If you're not quite sure what to say, look up the Mister Rogers episode where he talks about the death of a goldfish.  He actually covers it quite well and it can easily be adjusted to explain the death of a person.  It's in simple language a child can understand but also done in a way that won't scare a child as death can be a scary subject for them.

My mom passed away suddenly a little over three months ago. I have a 2.5 year old nephew. My brother explained to him that Grammy went to heaven and we won't be able to see her anymore. He didn't really ask too many questions after that. I'm also a preschool teacher and some of the parents talked to their kids about why I was out of school for so long (my mom lived across the country) and one mom mentioned to me that she was just honest with her son. She explained that my mom died and that when people die, it means they're no longer here and that we won't be able to see them again. She answered his questions honestly, but watered down to make it easier for him to understand. He asked her if everyone dies and she said yes, but that most of the time it happens when people are very old. I think that honesty is always a good strategy to take with kids. Unfortunately, death is a part of life and we have to prepare our kids for it. Good luck! Sending you good vibes and love!

I'm not sure how to explain with my child either. My dad, her papa was diagnosed with heart disease less than a year ago and she's extremely close to my parents and I'm so scared of him passing and how to explain it to her.
