Rice Cereal

Alyssa

So my baby is 3 months and is still waking up during the night because he is hungry! He will eat 5oz -6oz at bedtime and 2-3 hours later he wants more. My family keeps telling me to add rice cereal to his bedtime bottle and he will sleep all night !! Any thoughts ? I’m scared it’s too heavy on his stomach

Nope. 3 months is too early, and it’s not recommended to add to bottles at all. Talk to your paediatrician or family doctor.

No. That is too early to be giving the baby anything except formula or breastmilk. I don't understand who came up with the misconception that babies are supposed to sleep through the night, but, it's not true. Its frustrating and exhausting, certainly. But, babies wake up. We do what we have to do to get them back to sleep. Try a white noise machine.

Sorry if that came across grumpy. I would highly suggest looking into Nested Bean products though. They're a life saver.

Definitely not. It’s actually not true that it will help them sleep better. Rice cereal has no real nutrition and at 3 months old all of your baby’s food intake should be nutrient rich- formula or breastmilk. If he’s hungry it’s okay to feed him more formula or breastmilk. He may be going through a growth spurt. When in doubt, ask your pediatrician. Side note- when your baby is ready for cereal check out oatmeal, buckwheat or other complex grain cereals instead of rice. Rice cereal has high levels of arsenic due to the way its grown. The grain cereals are a safer and more nutrient dense option.

Always speak with your pediatrician before doing anything. Rice cereal in bottles is typically used for acid reflux babies in combination with acid reflux medications, because it helps keep the formula down. Same thing with oatmeal in cereal. My pediatrician had me put oatmeal in our son’s bottle at 2 months because it was a medical necessity due to severe acid reflux in combination with Zantac. Speak with your pediatrician.

My daughter woke up every three hours until her first birthday, her pediatrician recommended adding cereal to her bottle but it constipated her so I never did it again I just got up & fed her every 3 hours like she wanted

Nope! Way too young. My daughter would wake up once a nice until she was four months old when we introduced a weighted sleep sack. She soon slept through the night. She’s now almost two
