Not how I expected today to go - EDITED

Hailey

Oh what a day lol. So, I’m 41 and 2 right now. Was scheduled for an induction tomorrow (Friday) for being over due.

Yesterday I was supposed to go in for a non stress test, but they never called to tell me when, so it didn’t happen.

Today I went in for an ultrasound to check fluid levels. The tech was pretty quiet the whole time. Left for a few minutes after and comes back and says the radiologist was a little worried with the results so I was to go up to maternity triage.

So I do. Calling my husband and midwife as I went.

Well, I get to triage and after about 10 minutes one of the nurses asked if I knew why I was there. Apparently after sending me up, the radiologist neglected to call either triage or my midwife (so it was a good thing I did)

It turns out not only did the radiologist not mark the fluid levels but his worry was the cord looked to be wrapped around baby’s neck - which worried neither my midwife or the nurses. But since I was there my midwife decided to do the non stress test I was supposed to get yesterday.

Well, the test started with baby’s heart rate mid dip, which lasted for about a minute and then went to normal and never dipped again. But because we don’t know what caused the original dip my midwife consulted with the on-call OB and decided it was safest to admit me for observation and then go ahead with the induction tomorrow if all turns out fine.

So now I’m nice and settled into my maternity room, not in labour lol, getting a non stress test every 4 fours (even during the night. Goodbye minimal sleep)

But, I’m glad they are being cautious and I can’t wait to see my baby soon!

Edit!

So my first round of NST went by smoothly. No issues. The second round (around 1am) his heart rate kept dipping and they didn’t know why. So the OB offered to either do a c section or to basically do practise contractions (I would get some oxytocin to cause a few contractions and see how baby reacted). He gave us the pros and cons of both, gave hubby and I time to talk it over, as well as to call our midwife and see what she said. At the time he didn’t have a preference either way. When we were done talking to the midwife and had decided to try the practice contractions and go from there. However, when the OB checked the NST print out again he discovered that baby’s heart rate wasn’t going back up to normal enough, and he wouldn’t be comfortable/even able to try the practice contractions. And so c section became our only option.

January 10, at 3:27 am our little boy was born via c section weighing 8lb 6oz, and 20.7 inches long. He’s the cutest thing I have ever laid eyes on, and I am so glad to live in a time where safe c sections are a safe and reliable option for birth.

And also, super glad the radiologist decided to send me to the maternity triage for something that initially didn’t even worry my midwife or the nurses.
