For those of you that quit breastfeeding what was the reason?

I’ve EBF since LO was born. I’ve considered switching to formula once or twice over the last 6 months but just recently babe got his teeth, which I think is the final straw after some pretty nasty bites today. 
It got me thinking, why did others decide to stop breastfeeding or why did you choose formula if you didn’t give it a go at all? There’s no judgement here! Like I said, I think I’ll be switching to formula myself! Fed is best ❣️

I stopped as it was the worst experience of my life. Milk blisters, clogged ducts all the time, over production, thrush, mastitis, nipple cracks, my son had a tongue tie and pulled very hard, I was in pain all the time and never enjoyed a second of it. I ended up just pumping but because of a massive overproduction I had clogged ducts that would be gone for 2 hours max, which became worse once my son slept through the night and my breasts clearly didnt. I tried it all: midwife at home, lactation consultant, additional consultations with my gynaecologist and my general therapist as my mental state was decreasing as I felt like me quitting would affect my son's health. Eventually I stopped after 5.5 weeks after getting ill with the flu. I hated all of it so much let alone doing it in the middle of the night while having a severe fever. So I quit. Because of my overproduction it took very long to stop it and I eventually had to take medication for it, which still took some time to work. My son barely noticed anything when I switched to formula and I had worked it up in my head that he was going to not want to bond with me as much anymore. That was totally not the case. He still wants mommy above all. Basically what I am trying to say is: if you feel done than just be done, your LO will be fine. It is amazing how long you have done it and you should be extremely proud of yourself. Furthermore, it has been said weaning is good once you start solids, as it can be a natural transition. It will take a bit of getting used to for both of you but before you know it, it will be the new normal and both of you will be happier for it. Good luck mommy, I know it is tough to stop, but listen to your body and heart and you will know right now is the right moment, as you can no longer really enjoy it.

I breastfed for a week then switched to formula. Had a hard time with getting Bub to latch despite seeing two lactation consultants. The last consultant we saw introduced us to a nipple shield. He did great in the office using the shield..that same evening when we got home I could not get him to latch for nothing with and without the shield. We stayed up all night with him trying to get him to latch but he was not having it and it made me feel terrible. He was crying, I was crying, and that’s when I made the decision to switch. He has been the happiest baby ever since and is growing like a weed! Also, I work on a fast paced high acuity step down/cardiac floor as a nurse 12+ hour shifts, with rarely having time to stop and eat let alone pee during the shift it would have been very difficult to pump. The lactation consultant said it would be very difficult as well and my best option would be to cut back hours at work and get a hands free pump if I wanted to continue breastfeeding.

I told myself I would go 6 months of breastfeeding but my daughter would eat for 5-6 minutes every 2 hours during the day and was up 2-3 times overnight I started to feel tied to her and felt stressed trying to leave the house. I would pump in the morning but only get 2-3 oz at most so I started weaning her to formula 4 weeks ago she is 27 weeks old today and it is day 3 of no breast milk!! Oh and she is sleeping 10-12 hours straight at night! I am ready to have a martini!

I want so bad to breastfeed but may be forced to quit due to low supply. I got mastitis a few months back and my supply has never fully returned. Right now we are supplementing with donor milk and I’m still feeding him but it’s been a lot on me mentally. I decided that I’ve made it 6 months, which is a huge accomplishment and I should be proud. And if my body decides to stop producing, I’ll be okay with it. It’s been a hard, guilt ridden journey.

Teeth is a good reason. Lol. With this baby, after baby was diagnosed with failure to thrive and a lip tie, I pumped for a couple months then switched to formula for my sanity because pumping was just too much work to be worth it to also have to supplement with formula anyway.

I didnt really get a chance to unfortunately. We tried but my daughter ended up in the NICU before my supply was established, and she was bottle fed there so she never really latched well once we got home. I kept trying until she was about 3 months even though shed only latch for a few minutes once a day, then I threw in the towel.

I had to stop at 2 months as my sons latch was never great and I had to express after every feed and then top him up with breastmilk in bottle and sometimes add formula on top of that. I felt really guilty but it just didn't work for us and he's thrived and healthy and that's all that matters. I also had a 2 year old (he's now 3) and I felt like it was taking so much time away from spending with him and baby. When I stopped was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. You have done amazing getting to 6 months though.

I just changed from breastfeeding to formula because it was a ton of working pumping at work. I made it to six months and I feel great I made it this far. Also, I felt like I was producing skin milk🤪 and my supply was low so it’s nice to know she is getting more milk and more calories
