When your ex texts you "I feel guilty about how things ended, how are you?"

I mean honestly how do you respond? Very short version... Because I said 'It was just unexpected. I am really good'. And the response I got was 'that's good'.

I just don't understand why? Either have a real conversation or don't text me. I just don't understand what he expected me to say or his motive. Just why?

Back story is we dated over a year. When we were together beginning to end, it was so easy, we were just comfortable around each other. But he just lacked in effort the whole time. No effort to take me on a date/go out or text me or even plan days to hang out. I did it all. Finally this was the third warning and I told him if things are not going to change I didn't think I can go through college like this. He told me he had been thinking about breaking up with me. Just so frustrating. The first thing I told him when we started dating was to talk to me if it ever even crossed his mind so I would not be blind sided. Here I thought I was texting him to fix things. To tell him how shitty it feels to put in all the effort. To really talk it out and be done with it. And we break up. I am just glad I knew this was not what I wanted for myself. I want a guy that puts in as much effort as me.

Ugh just brought up a lot of emotions for him to text me so random with no explanation. So out of my system you go 😂
