What can I do about this grass? (I rent)

So maybe this is a dumb thing to be concerned about right now but now that we’re staying at home/playing outside more, I’d like my daughter to be able to have nice grass to run on. It’s so patchy and dead in spots. This is a rental property by the way. 
BTW: If your advice is to talk to the landlord, what should I say?

You can ask him to get you some grass seed and a hose so you can water it! Say with the scariness in the world you want to get fresh air in your backyard but it isn’t very inviting right now!

I would take up that brown 💩. Throw down some grass seed (you can scoop it out of bulk barrels at some home and garden/hardware store and pay by lb - way cheaper). Sprinkle that grass seed everywhere! Then in the parts where you raked up the brown 💩 you’ll have bare spots. What you’ll do for this is mix up the grass seed with a pack of patch repair. Water it. Throw some straw down on it to keep it all in place. Don’t mow over those patches for like a month and let it grow in real thick. Keep it watered throughout the summer. Having someone come out and aerate it couldn’t hurt either (I’m having it done in a couple of weeks)
