Is this rude?

Question

To invite people over, ask that your guests pickup something to contribute to what seems to be a bbq, make a plate for yourself and your roommates, and not offer any of your guests a plate? (But also didn't say "Hey you guys can eat")
A few people pitched in on drinks and food.
(And no this did not occur while in the shelter in place before some of you try to give a response unrelated to my question. I'm trying to prove a point by gathering unbiased opinions)

Too Add (this is an edit) I realized I wasn't clear because it definitely appears like we would've been waiting to be told to eat. What I should I said is that, they only cooked enough for the people who live in the house. Not for their guests as well. Sorry, hopefully that clears up my error.

We usually host at our house and we will make the main dish. We usually delegate different things to all our friends to bring. You bring it, we will make it.
It works out well for us!

It's not uncommon to take food to a place like that. Are you an adult? If you know the people, see people eating, etc...why are you needing to actually be told to go eat? No, it's not rude. Sounds like you want your hand held tho

If they didn’t cook enough food for everyone invited that was asked to contribute, that’s incredibly rude! It sounds like they were basically asking others to supply their meal with no reciprocation.

That is a crap party. It’s normal for a pot luck for people to being dished, but it is not normal or respectable for a host to invite guests over and eat in front of them and not provide anything for the guest.

That's extremely rude! It's one thing to invite people over for a pot luck. It's another to tell them to bring food but offer nothing as a host. 
I think it would have been tacky but more acceptable if they had said, "We don't have enough for everyone but if you want to bring your dinner to our house to eat, we'd love your company."

Its normal for people to bring a dish to an event. But asking the guest to make your plate is horribly incredibly rude. And at a BBQ its just kinda like eat when ya want to. The foods all set out and you just grab what you want whenever

I don’t think it’s rude to ask guest to bring a side, and depending on the house if you’re close they shouldn’t have to tell you to make a plate it’s kinda known when others start making plates it’s time to eat. I only think it would’ve been rude if they told you you couldn’t eat
